John T. McAllister, M.D.

Dr. John McAllister is a board-certified ophthalmologist who cares for adults with a full range of eye conditions and has a particular interest in cataract surgery, including laser-assisted cataract surgery. He joined NVOA in July 2014.

He earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin with honors in research and received the college's Millmann Award. After a transitional internship at Wheaton Franciscan St. Joseph Hospital in Milwaukee, he completed ophthalmology residency at The Eye Institute of the Medical College of Wisconsin. His undergraduate degree in biology is from Brigham Young University.

Dr. McAllister is active in national health policy as a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, where he has served on the Health Policy Committee, and as a member of the AMA RVS Update Committee (RUC). At the state and regional level, he has held board seats with both the Virginia Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons and the Northern Virginia Academy of Ophthalmology.

Away from the office he enjoys travel, singing, painting, and time with his wife and four children.
