Insurance & billing

In short

NVOA participates with most major medical plans, including Medicare, Aetna, Anthem, CareFirst, Cigna, and UnitedHealthcare, plus VSP and MetLife vision plans. Coverage depends on your specific plan, so please confirm benefits and any referral requirements with your insurer before your visit.

Understanding your policy helps avoid surprises. Some plans require a referral before a specialist visit. Our team is glad to help verify benefits, but your insurance company determines what is covered.

Billing questions

Frequently asked questions

Does NVOA accept Medicare?

Yes. NVOA participates with Medicare, Medicare Advantage plans, and Railroad Medicare. Medicare HMO plans are the exception.

Do I need a referral?

Some plans, such as many HMO and Medicaid plans, require a referral before you see a specialist. Check with your insurance company before your appointment.

Why was my eye exam billed to medical insurance?

If the doctor evaluates or manages a medical condition during your visit, the exam is billed to your medical plan rather than your vision plan. Our Your Visit page explains how visit types work.
